Set during the Joseon Dynasty, Ryung acts as a useless gangster in the marketplace by day but at night he is a chivalrous robber who robs corrupt government officials to give to the poor. After each robbery he leaves behind a wooden branch from a plum tree at the site of the robbery to take responsibility for the robbery. The poor citizens only know him as Iljimae. Bong Soon is a hilarious girl with good martial art skills and lives as a swindler. She only loves Ryung and sacrifices her whole life for him. Eun Chan is a doctor’s daughter and is good in nature and usually helps miserable people. She meets Iljimae once by chance, and their sweet love story begins. However, her love puts Iljimae in a dangerous situation because an Imperial Guard also loves her.

Actor Lee Jun Gi, who is currently shooting the SBS drama series “Iljimae,” is receiving significant support from his fans.

According to the actor’s management agency, Lee Jun Gi’s fanclub “Lee Jun Gi Gallery” recently visited the production crew on location with 120 goodie bags and snacks.

Each goodie bag contained useful items such as a towel, T-shirt, ice pack, cell phone accessory and socks. Prior to the surprise visit, the fan club also organized a barbeque party on location for the cast and staff of the show.

Lee Jun Gi showed his deep appreciation by promising to deliver a great performance until the very last episode and thanked his fans for their constant support.

Playing the role of Yong-ih, Lee Jun Gi and Se-dol, Lee Moon Shik are an entertaining two with their comic and playful roles in the drama “Iljimae”.
The viewers are more interested in the drama as their catchphrases become more and more pleasing to hear. The drama shows various ways in making viewers laugh, for example, Lee Moon-sik even takes out a tooth with his sheepish grin. His character is someone whom everyone can grow to love, his father and neighbor-like comic acts definitely win over many viewers’ hearts.

Even with Se-dol’s playful character, he also expresses his love for his son Yong-i (Lee Jun Gi) which brings tears as well as laughter.

Although Lee Joon Gi’s character Yong-i is a troublemaking gangster, his desire to become stylish and cool is amusing. His catchphrases describing what’s not ‘hip’ or ‘classy’ are fun to use in the daily life. However, he undergoes a transformation that makes him one of the favorite characters.

Iljimae is definitely one of the leading dramas today, both entertaining and moving!

Today, March 14, a staff of SBS television station revealed ”We are planning to extend drama Iljimae up to 20 episodes. On July 9, it will be aired the episode 18. If we extended 2 more episodes, the last episode will be aired on July 24.”

This man also said ”We only hope for the performing of Lee Jun Gi. We will wait for several days after airing the first episodes, then we can give final decision whether the drama should be longer or not. Anyway, if it added only 2 episodes, it would not a big problem.”

He said that the big problem to prolong this drama is the work schedule of main casts such as Lee Jun Gi, han Hyo Joo, Lee Young Ah & That’s why they cannot decide anything at this time.

This drama is filmed while still in the process of writing the script. Therefore, scriptwriter Choi Ran has to put all her strength and her effort to make an interesting content for this drama. She said that she will do anything to prolong the drama as long as the work schedule of main casts are suitable.

Bügün, 14 Mart, SBS televizyon istasyonunun personeli “Biz “İlcime” dramasını 20 bölüme kadar uzatmayı planlıyoruz. 9 Temmuz 18. bölüm yayınlanacak. Eğer daha 2 bölüm uzatırsak son bölüm 24 Temmuz yayınlanacak.” diye planlarını paylaştı.

Bunları söyleyen kişi “Biz yalnız Lee Jun Gi`nin oyununa güveniyoruz. 1. bölüm yayınlandıktan sonra bir kaç gün bekliyeceğiz, bundan sonra dramanın uzatılıp uzatılmayacağına kesin karar verebiliriz. Yine de eğer ancak 2 bölüm ilave edersek bu büyük bir sorun olmayacak.” demiştir.

Dramanın uzatılması için büyük sorun Lee Jun Gi, Han Hyo Joo, Lee Young Ah gibi ana karakterlerin çalışma programları olabilir… Bu yüzden şu anda hiçbir şeye karar veremiyoruz.

Drama senaryonun hala da yazılma projesinde olduğu süreçte çekiliyor. Bu yüzden senarist Choi Ran drama için ilginç içerik yapmak için tüm güç ve çabasını ortaya koymuş. O dramayı uzatmak için ana karakterlerin çalışma programlarının buna izin vere bildiği kadar elinden geleni yapacağını söyledi.

Iljimae is one of those folk-legend heroes, a real-life Robin Hood kinda guy dating back to the Chosun era who’s an ever-popular source of dramatic material.

Jang Dong Gun played him in one film version in 1993, and Choi Su Jong played him in a modernized version in 1990. Even Super Junior star Choi Si Won gave him a cheeky nod in the recent fusion sageuk parody The Story of Hyang Dan (the brief reference comes at the end of the second episode). A brief internet search also brings up the 1976 film version Righteous Fighter Il Ji Mae, a 1978 Flying Il Ji Mae, a 1961 title The Chivalrous Robber Il Ji Mae, and several animated versions to boot.

So when it became known that both MBC and SBS were preparing drama series based on the folk legend, both starring young rising stars, both to broadcast in early 2008, well, it’s no wonder the comparisons are flying and speculation rampant over which version will, to borrow a figure of speech, reign supreme. Not to mention that both Iljimae series will have to battle it out with yet another historical figure based on another Robin Hood-y popular hero, Hong Gil Dong.

SONG OF THE DAY

Pia & ”The Oracle.” To be honest, I don’t really like Pia & their brand of loud, energetic rock music is often too loud and discordant for me to enjoy, and reminds me of a lot of American rock bands I don’t particularly care for. But I do like this song.

Well, let’s compare:

Both have PDs with some drama experience at the helm: MBC’s will be produced by Group Eight and directed by Hwang In Roi, who directed Goong. SBS’s is produced by Green Snake Media and directed by Lee Yong Seok, who was behind Korea Secret Agency (aka Invincible Parachute Agent). MBC’s has cast singer Lee Seung Gi in the title role, while SBS has hot film and drama actor Lee Jun Gi.

MBC touts an early advantage, having secured the copyright from now-deceased artist Go Woo Young, who apparently created a well-known multi-volume set of illustrated books (I hesitate to call them comic books) for Iljimae. SBS says they’ll work on their own without the benefit of the original work, but they must be feeling uneasy.

PD Hwang In Roi is already location scouting in China, since his MBC version of the series will be shot in various locations in Korea, China, and Japan. He plans to use a fresh and new concept while remaining faithful to the original story.

I’d say Green Snake Media is the bigger name in dramas, producing hits like Lobbyist, Jumong, Unstoppable High Kick, All In. Group Eight did the two Goong series as well as Fantasy Couple, but I think Green Snake has the edge in terms of money and investment. I also give SBS the edge in casting, because while Lee Seung Gi is on the rise, he’s more noted for his singing, and his acting resume pales in comparison to Lee Jun Gi’s, who is not only popular but has already distinguished himself as a solid actor. Lee Jun Gi has appeared in several films, and has already been the lead actor in a drama series with the successful Time of Dog and Wolf. Judging from fan response, Lee Jun Gi’s role is the more anticipated of the two.

This should prove fascinating even just as a study in storytelling and drama-making, to see both versions side by side like this. It’s not every day you get such a convenient way to do that & for instance, Hwang Jini may be the most recent example of two different takes on the same original story, but the differing formats (drama series and film) allow for significant disparities.

So, SBS has the edge in terms of production credits and lead actor. And MBC has the advantage in having licensed the original books and potentially airing first. Well, if anything, hopefully the outcome is a rise in quality in both series as a result of the direct competition.

The cast and production team of SBS’s Iljimae gathered at Yongsan CGV today (July 24) to watch the finale of the drama together. The hit fusion sageuk premiered on May 21 to viewership ratings of 14.8%, which steadily climbed over the course of the drama’s run to end in the near-30% range.

In attendance was the drama’s star, Lee Jun Gi, with co-stars Lee Young-ah, Han Hyo-joo, and Park Shi-hoo, as well as PD Lee Yong-seok. Approximately 400 to 600 attendees were present (the numbers vary according to different reports), most of whom were members of Lee Jun Gi’s fan club and the drama’s online fan café members. [SPOILER, highlight to read] By the way, it appears the fans are in a spot of denial about the drama’s ending, saying, ”He may have died, but he’s not really dead.” Which sounds to me like dude’s dead. Reading the article’s summary of the ending, wherein Iljimae confronts the eeeevil king and engages in a hard fight against the king’s men, it also seems to bear similarities to the ending of Hong Gil Dong, actually, which was an ending I appreciated but would rather avoid repeating in more dramas of its kind. Lee Jun Gi and PD Lee both expressed their thanks for the fans and staff, although Lee Jun Gi did wish they’d had more time to present a better finale episode (”If we’d had more time, we could have shown you a better result, but I’m a little disappointed that we weren’t able to do that”), referring to how things fell behind schedule. Apparently the drama finished filming its last episode on the day the last episode aired. (Yeesh! The last time I heard of something that frantic was with Fantasy Couple’s finale, which sounded insane.)

The drama Working Mom (starring Yeom Jung-ah and Bong Tae-gyu) will air in Iljimae’s time slot starting next week, on July 30.

The talk of the town had been whether Park Shin Yang who is involved in a pay dispute and antagonizing industry bigwigs, would be among the Daesang nominees in the 2008 SBS Drama Awards which was announced today.

In a statement from SBS today, ”The nominees for the different awards hinges greatly on the opinions from drama production companies. We can’t totally disregard tv ratings also but that is just one of the many criterias from which we pick the nominees. The Daesang will be picked from those who have acted in SBS dramas that has aired over the past year. The nominees was derived through 70% of votes from drama producers while the remaining 30% are from tv ratings, how much influence it had, its impact on society, the acting, etc. Viewers can express their opinion through the popularity poll.”

The Daesang will be contested by Song Yun Ah (On Air), Kim Ha Neul (On Air), Oh Hyun Kyung (First Wives Club), Moon Geun Young (Painter of the Wind) and Lee Jun Gi (Iljimae). Lee Jun Gi will also compete for the Best Actor Award with Kim Rae Won (Gourmet), Lee Bum Soo (On Air) and Park Shin Yang (Painter of the Wind). The Best Actress Award will be contested by the female nominees for Daesang. Awards ceremony goes live on 31st December.

I am not sure if it’s just me, but the way things went in Episode 17, 18 this week in Iljimae, it seems like Pandora’s Box was being opened. So many things just happened and it just kept speeding away, leaving you breathless.

Episode 17 kicked off with the death of the lovable Swedol, Yong and Shi Hoo’s foster father after he was beaten to death for impersonating Iljimae. It was a really sad scene that lasted nearly 20 minutes as everyone grieved for his death. Thankfully the drama is at its very end because he was very much an integral part of the drama with his comedy and great acting.

So what else happened? Plenty of stuff. Iljimae was framed for the death of the two remaining ministers that helped the current king to power. In his quest to find the truth, Iljimae finally fights Shi Hoo 1-on-1 where the earlier was clearly superior to him. But Shi Hoo manages to injure him after Iljimae decides not to have his life for indirectly killing her real sister. Bong Soon finds out that her foster father killed her whole family and swears revenge.

Iljimae also discovers that Eun Chae’s father had a hand in killing his father, Lee Won Ho as he breaks off ties with Eun Chae under the plum blossom tree, leaving her heartbroken at his sudden change of heart.

Plot
On a night when the plum blossoms were in full bloom, young Geom (actor Yeo Jin-gu) witnessed the death of his father. The black emblem engraved on the sword shone under the moonlight... His father’s blood was splattered on the plum blossoms... After that night, Geom’s life became a wretched existence. He was adopted by a thief, Swe Dol (actor Lee Moon Shik) who named him Yong.

One day, Yong (actor Lee Joon-ki) remembered his past when he was being chased by a group 13 years ago (1644. 22nd year of King In-jo’s reign). Thoughts of revenge didn’t occur to him. His dreams were to be reunited with his mother and sister, recover his family home, and live with his family again. But when he finally met his sister again, she was executed in front of him. Revenge was all he wanted after that. Yong has a tattoo of the black emblem, which he saw on the sword that killed his father, engraved on his chest.

With the skills he learned from his foster father, who was a small-time thief, he obtained information from the nobles by committing his first break-in. But he left behind a plum blossom by accident. When the officials found this evidence, people began calling him “Iljimae” which means "A single stalk of plum ". From then on, he left behind a painting of red plum blossom to mark his presence and prove that he was the burglar everytime he robbed a house. Yong discovered the existence of a secret list, with the names of all the members of the secret Tianyou Clan while slipping into a nobleman’s home in search of the sword with the black emblem. Yong recalled that his father was a member of the secret Tianyou Clan. He then decided to use Eun-chae (actress Han Hyo-ju) to obtain the full list. Under his meticulous plan, Iljimae approached Eun-chae. Eun-chae fell into love with Iljimae and the feelings became mutual but he kept his focus on getting revenge and holding back on telling the truth to Eun-chae.

The royal court was deploying all their forces to capture Iljimae. Shi-hoo (actor Park Shi-hoo) failed to capture Iljimae twice during a stakeout. But Iljimae suffered a deep gash from Shi-hoo’s sword. Bong-soon (actress Lee Young-ae) discovered Yong lying half-unconscious from his wound and she took him to her foster father Gonggal, who saves Yong’s life. Yong then found out that Gonggal is one of the two legendary assassins and begged Gonggal to teach him martial arts. The stories of various incidents involving Iljimae spreaded among the people who began to worship him as the hero of the commoners. Iljimae robbed more noblemen to the delight of the people.

Royal palace prosecutor Shi-hoo became obsessed with catching Iljimae. King In-jo felt threaten by the growing reputation of Iljimae as the king of the commoners and wanted him captured at all cost.

Mysterious deaths kept occurring after the death of his father. Small nail scratches are found on the dead bodies that keep turning up. The shocking truth emerged... Who wielded the sword with the black emblem? Iljimae then bravely embarked on his final mission!

Notes
The 2009 MBC drama "Moon River" (Dolahon Il Ji-Mae), also centers around the character Il Ji-Mae, but "Moon River" focuses more on Il Ji-mae's personal life.
